Pickin' and Thiftin'

This week my local little antique and collectible shop advertised 30 boxes of Christmas, I had to get over there and check it out!  What if somebody got  something good before me!  Hah!!  I said I was there to look at the Christmas stuff, he showed me one small shelf, there was definitely nothing there that I was interested in, he took me to another area,   I should have taken a picture to the pile of boxes that he took me to - there were the thirty boxes, he said for me to just go through them!  Imagine that!!  So, there I was down on the floor going through these boxes - this lady apparently loved Christmas, there was Christmas everything - she had a salt and pepper shaker collection of eight hundred shakers - just think of the dusting involved in that!  So, here's what I scrounged out of the boxes - I may not be keeping it all, but some of it will be perfect for my vintage red Christmas shelf.

These are all stamped Made in Japan, that's really all I was looking for and I didn't even take all that was there, they're all salt and peppers from that big collection plus one toothpick holder.

If you follow me on Instagram,  you've already seen this picture, aren't these shakers just the sweetest?  It's another set of Made in Japan ones.  Oh, and if you don't follow me on Instagram, you should - right here!

I'm really hoping I have enough Shiny Brites or other ornaments to make a wreath this year - this is what all these little bits and pieces are for.  

I also found these two old catalogues in the boxes, one is Army & Navy from Regina, Saskatchewan, 1958, the other is a French catalogue from 1957, the Dupuis Company from Montreal.  I think I'll be using these for SMASHing.  Does anybody remember the Rawleigh salesman, I do and that's why I picked up that little booklet.

There's some wild looking toys in the Army & Navy book, that is one creepy looking monkey down in the right corner!

I had these cute pixies on Instagram too - they were 50 cents each.

I rescued this little bag of vintage Christmas birds, the clips are all missing and the tail feathers need some attaching - but for 50 cents, well, I had to take them, they might be nice for the wreath too.

Someone had dropped off some vintage cards at the Salvation Army, I found seven that I liked and they cost me 20 cents.  Some of the cards are old Hallmark ones. 

I did find one Vera this week and it cost me 99 cents.  It's just amazing to me how many patterns there are out there and I very seldom ever find a duplicate.

My last item I am quite excited about, this is nice little find at Value Village, an item that was probably priced incorrectly because I paid next to nothing for it.  I plan to list it and hope I can make a nice little profit from it.  It's a Holt Howard mayonnaise jar, stamped 1959, I've never seen one of these before, it's cute but not cute enough to keep!!!

So, that's it for this week, the Christmas sections are pretty well up and running in the thrifts but there's a lot of junk, I had to look hard for what I did find!!

More Stuff, Thrifted and Otherwise

I made the rounds yesterday at the thrifts, I think I spent a whopping $4.50 - you know those are going to be small finds..

These were unopened, but not anymore - a pack of 8 Hallmark Halloween party invitations that sold for 60 cents, I paid 50 cents.

These older Old Maid cards were in a bag at Value Village, I just wanted those cards, my kids used to have them in the plastic case, that's the only reason I wanted them, they're not even the same set they had, but.....

One lone Vera came home with me, it's not a beautiful pattern, that's for sure, another one added to the collection.

I bought this book at a little shop on our way home, in Maine.  I was so happy with this find - I see them on Ebay for not very much and I didn't pay much but I know that around this area that anything Dionne would go much higher.  I did a blog post in June on the Dionne Quints after I visited their childhood home which is only 2 1/2 hours from where I live - here is that post and also a page that I SMASHed on that day.  I won't go into all that again as I did touch on their life in the previous post.  They were just the cutest!

I forgot to share this from the 70 Mile Yard Sale - somehow my Hands Down game is gone, my kids used to play with it when we went home, well, now we have another one for the future, I left it there.  I loved that game!!

I brought a couple of watches back with me - I know nothing about them, but the one in the box is very unique, it was used but the box is like new and it has the price tag hanging on it.   I guess they belonged to someone in my family bu tI don't know who!    I'm going to use them for decoration.

This came from my mother-in-law's house, someone had a prize winning dog but we're not positive who that was, they did well at that dog show back in 1949.

This old photo album is full of greeting cards from the 70's - it's so neat, I have a hankie holder in the same kind of suede material.  Some of the etchings are original, others were written on it.

Just a Few Finds

I've been saying that there is no rhyme nor reason to the pricing at Value Village, I'm thinking that again after what I bought yesterday.  

I wasn't really taken with this little guy, until I turned him over...

This was Jimmie's -  given to him when he was born in 1942 - and made in Occupied Japan - it's in perfect shape and the price - $1.99 - I've seen figures like this priced way higher and not nearly as nice.  I noticed yesterday they were throwing some of the grab bag items in a cart, I know that all the colour coded tags mean which day they were put out on the floor, a cashier told me that one day, but I wonder what they do with that kind of stuff when it doesn't sell??

My Vera dry spell is over - for now anyway, this was at Value Village too for 99 cents.

I've purchased this game before but it was newer so I'll compare the two and use one for crafting purposes.  It's called "The Greatest of all Party Games"  - I've never played it, have you? Copyright on the instructions is 1947.  I paid $1

I couldn't help myself - I had to buy this book, it was 50 cents - it's in just perfect condition, not a mark, not a tear, it must have been sitting on a shelf somewhere - it doesn't even seem that the spine was bent back.  The book is from 1962 and it's full of sweet graphics - there's a nice mix of poems and stories.

The Goods

I noticed that I don't do as many thrift finds posts as I used to, I just don't see things that I really want and at the height of the Pyrex craze, I was buying just about every piece of Pyrex that I saw, but now I have more than enough and am even trying to unload a few pieces, I just don't have the space for it and how much can I really use?  I'm sure that will put off a few of you that are still hard core collectors, but, this could very well happen to you, but, with that said, I still will pick up something that I really like and that is a special piece.   I was away this week and Saturday was the first real yard sale day for me, I went around town to just about every one, most had junk but I was lucky at a couple, real lucky, I think!!  I'll start with the yard sales and see what you think...

I have been pinning these cake carriers on Pinterest and wanting one so bad.  I can't believe my luck - to find this at a yard sale - just what I wanted.  I paid $5, I would have paid more, I wanted one so much!   Love it!!

I don't really know what these tin cans are, they have nursery rhymes all over them, they're so cute  - also at the yard sale.

This little plastic manger scene was in the original box, 29 cents was the original price.

You know I like buttons and old buttons on cards, what luck!!  Look at the sweet little baby ones.. I found all those items at the same sale, it was a good day!!    I know I found some neat stuff but that might be it for the whole summer, I'm never very hopeful!

These weren't marked, I asked the lady how much, she took a quick look - $1 - sold to me!!  I have quite a stash of shiny brites now but you can't pass them up when you see them for that price.  There are a few in the box that aren't so old but the majority are and I think what took my eye were the tiny ones, I haven't seen any like that.

I know anybody that loves blow molds is going to love this one!!  $2.  I almost didn't get out of the car, I don't like going to sales where there are people sitting around staring at you in lawn chairs, but, it's a good thing I did -because now I own Santa and his reindeer!   They had two more too - I left them there as I already have a Santa and snowman.  This is going to look so cute on the roof of the shed!

This little guy and the rest of the items I bought when I was at Carla's last week,  he's made in Japan, the Giftcraft sticker is still on him.  I didn't notice there's a little chip on the back, but nobody is going to see that where I'm going to place him - and after all, he was only $1.

I didn't notice the flaw on this little guy either - somebody has already used glue on him, but once again, nobody will notice, another made in Japan cutie, with the Giftcraft sticker still attached.

I'm always interested in the old catalogues, just wish I could find a Christmas one.

Some of these came from yard sales, some from a thrift store - I really hit the jackpot - there's some great old ones there.  I found some Eloise Wilkin books which I already have, but I can't leave them behind, they're good for sharing.

I am on a dry spell for Vera scarves so I was really happy to find one - an old one and a ladybug - even better!

This is one of those Pyrex items that I meant I would buy if it was special - of course, turquoise is, and it's a 404 - it cost me $3.  Another lady had it in her hands, she put it down, I swooped in!!  

I had a great week with some special finds - I also found some scarves for resale, an old Monopoly game for SMASHing - wouldn't it be nice if all outings were so great!!

Finds from the Road

This past Wednesday I had a chance to go away for a few days, my husband was away for the week, so I met up with him mid week - I had two days to myself to check out the antique markets and thrifts in the area.   My favourite warehouse is always the Freelton Antique Mall - I might get there twice a year but I always come away with something - I think deals are to be had, even though some of the merchandise is crazy expensive.  I also hit the two antique malls in St. Jacobs and one in Cambridge.  That was along with a few Value Village stores, a couple of Salvation Army shops and a St. Vincent - it was a great couple of days...  I picked up quite a few nice books too but I'm going to save them for another post.  I also picked up a few other items for gifts and for the Easter swaps - but I can't ruin those surprises!

This is bad - now I am branching out from Christmas to Easter blow molds, isn't this a sweet bunny?  I've never seen one before.  He's missing the light but we'll get him hooked up.  He was $4.

I've always collected things, back in high school, I was collecting match books, I had a lot but somewhere along the line, they were thrown out, when I saw this cookie tin full of matches, I grabbed them - $5 for 90 matches plus the tin - not bad.  I'm going to do a page on matches in my SMASH book.  Do restaurants and hotels even pass out matches anymore, now that I'm thinking of it, I never see them..

I was happy to find one Vera and it's a really pretty one.

Three Liberty of London and one Oscar de la Renta - all to be listed for sale

I saw this once - it must have been on a blog or Flickr, I've surely never seen it before or I would have bought it - it's so different, have you ever seen one?  I paid $10 for it at the antique mall, I don't mind paying that for something cute like this that I know I'll never find .   It's a Glasbake loaf pan, no, I am not starting a Glasbake collection!  

This came from Value Village, I didn't know what to make of it - notice there is no spout and no one cup marking.  I sent a pic to Sharon who I figured would know about it, she said it's old, so I took it.  And, it is, it's from the 40's - it's a dry measure, that's why there's no spout.

Charcoal snowflake is my favourite Pyrex pattern, I have never seen a dish this size before, it says it's 1 1/4 quart, 548B - I thought this other one below was the space saver, now I have these two sizes, I'm really not sure??  There are no antique malls around here and I know I'd never see anything like this at a thrift - I paid $12 - they also had the turquoise snowflake in the same size.  To tell you the truth, I wouldn't have minded having that one too, but I restrained myself!

This is my collection of Charcoal Snowflake - the 2.5 qt casserole, oval baker, divided,  the space saver in the stand, which is JAJ and now my new one.  Love this pattern!
