Finds from the Road

Last week I tagged along with my husband when he had to go away for business, I like when that happens, especially when it's in an area where there are numerous thrift shops and a few antique malls within a nice distance - oh, GPS, you're a great invention!!!

How many times have you seen something on a blog or on Instagram and immediately think you need that item?  I've been seeing vintage Valentine candy boxes, it made me remember Dad buying those for Mom, I have never seen them in a shop, so I never imagined I would ever have one!  Jackpot - I found a booth that had five boxes - two were red, the others were non Valentine colors, I knew I was taking one, but I came to my senses and took the other red one too.

Both of the boxes are a nice size, about 10 inches in length.  The top one has writing on the back - From Warren, 1940.  The bottom one is very fancy and still has the Moirs, Halifax, Canada, tag on it.  You don't see elaborate things like this anymore.  The paper liner is still inside the box.  I really don't have anything in the line of vintage Valentines, now I do!!

I've been on an Ideals kick lately, my good friend, Sharon, told me they were great for SMASHing, I never gave them a second glance before, but she was right, they're great -  I found a few for Christmas, I used some for pages, some of the pictures are beautiful and some of the verses are ok to use too!    Jackpot, again - four Valentine Ideals books!

I can't remember the last time I bought a postcard but these were cheap and cute!

I very seldom ever look at the children's book section anymore, I have quite a few Eloise Wilkin books and any I do see are the usual ones you see all the time.  I was just walking past the books and this one was sitting to the side - I grabbed it - it was 50 cents.   It's a beautiful book, it was given to Katie from Birgitta, 1st Christmas, 1989 - you should have kept this book, Katie.  

I have never seen an Eloise Wilkin illustration that wasn't beautiful!

No trip would be successful without finding a Vera or two - I'm really liking that animal print one - it's different, has the tag attached and was only 75 cents!!!

My Vintage St. Patrick's Day Postcards

Erin Go Bragh - Ireland Forever!!    The Shamrock Forever!  This is for all you Irish and wannabee Irish out there - I don't have a speck of Irish blood in me, that I know of anyway, but that doesn't mean that I won't put out a green item or two!!!

So, once again, it's time to share a few of my vintage postcards.  These old cards just take you back in time, right back to the early 1900's for some of these cards - I especially like them if there's a message on the back.  Wouldn't it be fun to get a card like one of these in the mail this week?  

Some of these cards are unused but this one was used - postmarked from Easton, PA, 1910 to Miss Gwendoline O'Leary, Clayton, New York - doesn't that sound like a good old Irish name - it was signed "Rose" - there was no other message.  This card was printed in Germany, it's also an Ellen Clapsaddle card, I've shared a few of those with you before - her work was beautiful!

Tessie thinks this card should stir all the patriotism in Jean's veins!!  It was postmarked from Toronto, 1913.

I found that vintage Hallmark card in with a bunch of Christmas cards a few months back - it's sweet!!

Postcard Post

I can't believe I haven't blogged since the 19th of December, it sure has been busy, no time for blogging and even less time for blog reading!  Hopefully, Santa found all of you with no problem and left a few goodies under your tree - maybe a vintage item or two...

Today we are heading out for a couple of days, but I didn't want to let another day go by without posting something.  Here are two more cards from my small postcard collection, both are beautiful Ellen Clappsaddle postcards and are very old.

This card was postmarked 1907 from Ithaca, New York and sent to an address in Alpine, NY - this person was short on words, they didn't write anything.

The message was written on the front of this card, the writing is very hard to make out though.  This card is an undivided back one, also postmarked in 1907, it was sent to Mr. S.C. Vandrame in Galveston, Texas.

These old cards are so pretty, I'm going to look for a couple of New Year's cards, they sure won't look anything like these....

My Vintage Christmas Postcards

It was exactly one  year ago today that I did a post on my vintage Christmas postcards, if you care to go back and look at those cards, click right here.  I collected these cards for a few years, they really are so pretty and every so often I just like to take them out and have a look.

The postcards with artwork by Ellen Clapsaddle were always my favorite - the children are always so sweet.

This card has no postmark but it is written on - it was written to Mary in Kokomo, Indiana from her "bro and sis" - Jack and Pearl.  It has a one cent stamp.

Another Clapsaddle card that was exchanged between friends, from Herbert to Miss Nellie Otto.

This Clapsaddle has the cutest message, I had to scan it too..

I wonder how long it took this card to travel all the way from Ontario to Florida back in 1922..

If you check out my post from last year, there's a card there from the same series as this one.  This card was written from Willa to Eleanor Blanchard.

This card was postmarked in 1916 from Gramma to Mr. Le Mallett

This card is probably the newest one out of this lot, it is postmarked 1924 and sent to an address in Clarksville, Iowa.

I think this one is so cute - looks at his little toolbox, he really wants Santa to know where he is.  This card was postmarked 1913 and sent from Uncle Axel to Master Gordon Wrigel in St. Paul, Minnesota

This one is what you call an undivided card - there are no divisions on the back for the message and address - it was postmarked 1906 from Bellows Falls, VT and sent to Winchendon, MA - from Aunt E to Master Dexter Whittermore.

This card is really cute too - it's a Whitney card.

This card was never postmarked, it must have been hand delivered from Aunt Lillian to Russel.

Don't you wish you could look in your mailbox tomorrow and find a card or two like any of these?

Stuff

We were away last weekend and that means some different thrifting opportunities - I can tell you, it was pretty slim pickins' - I went to four different thrift stores and this is all I bought..

I'll be packing this away for next year's Easter - I think I was desperate at that point because I had not bought anything, I paid $5 for this at Goodwill, a little more than I would normally pay but it was made in Japan and it is cute!!

Since I'm talking about made in Japan, I'm including this planter I bought ages ago, I just took it out of the closet, it's not in the best of shape, you can see the fine cracks in it but it is another cute one that was made in Japan.  

I was happy to find a couple of Vera's on the weekend - lately all I've been finding are the split tip ones but I'm not fussy!

We went to a couple of antique markets as well, there's always lots to look at and lots that is way overpriced - I bought one item at each market - 

This box of vintage postcards was $13 - there must be 75 cards in there - Easter, Christmas, Valentines - a little bit of everything.   It really was a good deal!!  They'll be great for gifts, SMASHING, decoration - I love reading the messages on the backs -  it really gives a hint about  life back in the early 1900's.

I bought a bag with 8 greeting cards in it - the images are quite different from what we see now...

I've been on some sort of lucky streak as far as blogging contests are concerned - I've won two in the past couple of weeks, both of my prizes arrived this week - I love getting mail like this...

My first prize to win came from Chloe at L'Heure Bleue at Home - thanks so much for the beautiful hankies and the brooch, it was all packaged so nicely!

Later on in the week my next prize arrived from Pam at VirginiaRetro - this is the sweetest little book on grandparents and is full of so many cute illustrations - and also a runner, I know just where I'm going to put it too!  Pam had her card decorated and used washi tape on her package - love it!!  Thanks!

These are not vintage but I just wanted to show them to you - I bought them last week at Winners - they're cases with vintage Ladybug book covers - I couldn't decide so I bought two!

Easter from a While Back

The price to mail this was only one cent, did you know that Canada has done away with the penny? Rounding out is the newest thing..

I bought a few vintage Easter cards when I was away the other week, they were just too cute to pass up, I had to  pay a little bit more because I bought them at an antique mall, I never see them at thrift stores, it was cheaper than buying them online.    I guess my jar decoration could count for my pinned from Pinterest post ( but it won't) - I put some grass, chocolate eggs and a chocolate bunny in the jar - instant Easter decoration - part vintage, part new.

This card is mine, my grandparents sent it to me - Mom and Dad saved  most all of the cards, dating back to the 70's - I also have a card from them and one from my other grandparents, I put them in my SMASH book.  

I have two vintage Easter decorations and I just found one of these this week.  The little bunny girl is a Lefton figure, she's so cute with the bunny ears and bunny tail.    I stopped into a little antique shop the other day, I only go there every so many months as there isn't much turn around, I hoped I would find something Easter and I did - the little cart is holding some Jolly Rancher jelly beans now  - it was only $3.49 - and it's made in Japan - another oldie!
