The Auction and The Thrifting...
Yesterday we spent the afternoon at a local auction, it was hosted by a small antique and collectible shop in town, Second Hand Treasures. There was a lot of great merchandise, it was a fun filled all afternoon affair and then supper out, it was perfect!! My husband bid on a vintage Pop-o-matic Trouble game, it went too high, boo hoo!! It was nice too, the pieces were wooden, not plastic! I missed out on a piece of pink depression glass, once again, it went for more than I was willing to pay!
We only ended up with two items though - here's what my husband bought - he is more excited about this than me, it's a vintage drafting table, there was a paper with it, from the 30's. He's an engineer, that's why he goes for things like that!! He's happy!
I had my eye on a bowl the whole auction, then when the auctioneer said they were going to wrap it up and take the rest back to the store, oh, no, not a purchase for me... So, we're in the line up to pay for the beautiful drafting board, the owner comes along and asks if I got lots of stuff, I said I got nothing, I was waiting for that bowl - he said he would sell it to me, $2 for me... Look what I got...
It's the largest of the Fire King tulip mixing bowls - how pretty is that? I don't collect Fire King and I won't be starting but after finding those cute salt and pepper shakers, minus the covers, in Prince Edward Island for $2, I just wanted that bowl and now I have it! I've placed it on the corner shelf, love it!! Sometimes it pays to know people in a small town!! Thank you, Chad!
I haven't been buying many dishes lately, because, really, I have plenty but sometimes you see things and you just have to purchase - you know what I mean?? Last week I found these treasures...
I couldn't pass up this Friendship 401 bowl, not for $1, I couldn't!!
I have a couple of pieces of this English Pyrex in the Snowflake pattern, but no plates and none with the marking on the bottom that this one has - Jobling, Opalware, Made in England, my other pieces just have JAJ - it's a sweet little plate.
I think I paid 25 cents for this little souvenir from Prince Edward Island - Woodleigh Replicas is no more so it's a neat little piece of the past. I have a couple more PEI souvenirs the same style, oh, no, hope I'm not starting a new collection...
This isn't old but when it comes to anything Snoopy related and it's Halloween, if it's cute, I'll be buying it!
I bought this old coloring book to use for SMASHing - it's not even used - copyright 1986. Older pop up books are hard to come by in good condition, I picked up this one to add to my Christmas book collection - it's in perfect shape, every tab is in working order, the book was given to Leane from Aunt Deb in 1978.
This week I am going to visit my daughter on an over night trip, there's a few thrift shops there, hope I find something fun!

Some Vintage Things
This is a miss match of vintage things - some that I brought from home, some that I purchased.... Vintage finds have been few and far between at the thrifts lately, but then, I really don't need much but it's still fun to hunt..
This doll was mine - I don't really remember playing with her too much, I think she was "too good" - I remember that a US relative had given it to me. I imagine she bought it because she's a Jill doll and Jill is my name!! The Jill doll was produced by Vogue Dolls from 1957 to 1965, her popularity waned after the introduction of the Barbie doll. I looked through a site that has many of the outfits, for the life of me, I can't remember any of them.
Back then we could never find anything with my name on it so this would have been very special. |
She's very pretty |
I do remember she had drop earrings in the shape of a heart, I think they were the same as her hair band. |
This came from my mother in laws house, it's so pretty.. |
In honour of Queen Elizabeth's Coronation in 1953 |
Just a neat old Barbie book by Wonder, copyright 1964I'm linking this post up with Thrifty Things Friday and Junkin Joe |

Yard Sale Jackpot!
I very rarely am ever out at a yard sale when it begins, maybe that's why I don't often find anything very exciting. Yesterday I was at one at 8 because I had seen an ad the night before that this one had scrapbooking and craft items, I was hopeful! She had quite a bit, I picked out this pile which she let me have for $2.
Another person was set up at her yard sale, so I strolled on over - I ended up needing a box - I bartered, ended up with everything for $6 - I was feeling pretty proud of myself, $6 for such lovely items!!
I very seldom ever buy a vase but the color of this took my eye, I figured it was old, I researched it when I got home - it's a Fire King Hob Nail vase in such a pretty coral color - it's in pristine condition - isn't it beautiful? I need some flowers for it..
Then I spotted these glasses - we were just in the process of getting a box going for me and another lady put her hand on them, the seller hollered out - they're sold!!! Take your hands off my glasses!!! She thought they were so retro - I agree with that!! There are ten glasses of one size and two of another - I love them!
I have a small collection of red handled instruments - I never see things like this at a yard sale..
My last item there was a Christmas tablecloth - it's lovely and not a stain! Six dollars for all that stuff - it's hard to believe!!! But, read on - I found more great stuff!
I found these three old books at one sale for $1 - two more different ones for my Christmas collection.
This was sort of an odd thing to buy - I'll be taking off all these old decorations and fixing it up with something nice -it was 50 cents.
The last sale I pulled up to was a big one and so sad - a woman in our Town had been killed in an accident just before Christmas, her daughter had gone to school with Darcy, her husband was moving and selling a lot of stuff - there were bins full and boxes full, I didn't go through everything because my hands became full very quickly. I really had no business buying any of this stuff - but, it's really nice, I just had to and wait 'til you hear what I paid.
I never stopped by this sale until probably an hour or so after it started, why had nobody picked up these bowls?? They're beautiful!! I just got rid of a bunch of overflow Pyrex and now I'm buying these - but I think they're perfect for summer. They're Federal bowls - I've seen a blue one while I was researching, is the blue one another size or maybe the same size as the orange one?
I had made the rounds and thought that the bowls were my only purchase and then I spotted these -
An ice bucket and seven glasses, it looks like a red one is missing, I don't care at all about that - they're Hazel Atlas - I couldn't believe my luck - and you won't either - I paid $2 for the bowls and the glass set!!!
I've been thinking about that poor woman ever since - I wonder if they had belonged to her mother...I'll take real good care of them.
I moan and complain about the yard sales around here - this is actually the second one this year that I've gotten some great things, it sure makes up for all the bad ones..
