Did You Have a Charm Bracelet?

Did you have a charm bracelet?  If you grew up in the 70's or before, there's a very good chance you did - and if you like me, did grow up in the 70's - you probably recognize Susan Dey from the Partridge Family as the model in this ad - how I loved that show!

This was the case that most jewellery stores around where I lived displayed their charms - I looked for a long time online and this is the only picture of one of these display cases that I could find - looks like this one has seen better days, I still see them every so often in antique shops full of jewellery.  Oh, the thrill of pushing that little button on the top right hand side and the many charms would appear as it revolved.

This is my charm bracelet, still in the original case - given to me by the guy who would become my husband. Charm bracelets were all the rage - I had to have one!!!

The love birds in the middle was the first charm, the one that he picked out with the bracelet.  Charm bracelets really do give a look into our history - places we had been, special events, memories galore.  I have numerous charms that my penpal, Carol gave me, all those years ago - I've mentioned her before - we're still penpals - but now what do you call a texting and email pal??

I also have Mom's charm bracelet - she didn't have quite as many charms as I did..

I am not lacking for charm bracelets, that's for sure, I gave my grandmother's to Carla but I still have my other grandmother's bracelet.

She had the most charms of any of us, I always loved her bracelet because she had head charms of all her grandchildren with their birth dates engraved.

I could be wearing all these at once - but, I don't think I will!!!!

  1. Well, we certainly have a lot in common. After a second, I did recognize Susan Dey. I have a charm bracelet, although I've only had it since the 90s. Have my mom's (I posted both of them last year sometime). My grandmother also had one with all the grandkids "heads." My aunt broke it up and gave each kid his/her charm. I have mine on my bracelet. All the ones you showed are fab!

  2. Oh, I love all of these charm bracelets, too. It really was a treat to get to go and buy and new charm. I'm a little older than you but I loved Susan Dey, too. Well, I don't have as many charms but I did a post about mine one time. I'll send you the link if you want to see it. Sweet hugs!

  3. I have a charm bracelet. Just recently I gave it to my daughter to keep in her safe, but not before I made a list of the charms and what they meant to me. This way when my children and grandchildren find it some day they will know and not wonder. I've thought about adding the engraved heads for my children and grandchildren but haven't gotten around to it. I really love mine.

  5. Oh my gosh what a stroll down memory lane. Of course I recognize Susan Dey. Loved the partridge family (Keith ~ swoon) aka David Cassidy. I also had a charm bracelet and still have it. I think I will start to wear it again ;-)

  8. Yes! I still have my charm bracelet and my mother-in-law's too. I have a few charms that were never attached to my bracelet and I should put them on and wear it someday. Do you think people will think I'm strange? It's such a waste of silver isn't it? I don't know if mine is a Rembrandt but it's in it's original case too. Fun memories. :)

  11. I have two! One has charms of objects from countries in Europe I visited. Things like a windmill for Holland, beer stein and cuckoo clock for Germany, flamenco guitar Spain etc. The other bracelet has silver enameled painted shields. I've had that one since the 70s. I continued to buy shields of some of the European countries and cities I didn't get ones for in the past and ones I've gone to in most recent years. Makes me want to get them out and look at them!

  19. A charm bracelet is like a scrapbook on your wrist! I have mine from grade school...I guess it would truly be considered vintage! Love your bracelets and the stories they tell.

  20. My mom had two, and I used to love looking through them and having her tell me what each charm meant. She had an eyeglasses charm and the arms of the glasses opened & closed, loved playing with them. Now she's building bracelets for my daughters! We have a jewelry store near us that still has a case like that with the revolving shelves, too. Featuring this on my Link Party Features Board on Pinterest. Thanks so much for linking this to the History & Home Link Party. Take care - Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com

  21. I love charm bracelets, especially the sound they make when you move your wrist. I still have the one that my grandmother started for me when I was little. She would buy a charm to commemorate each special event or holiday - every charm has a story to go with it. It got so big we turned it into a necklace! Your bracelet is beautiful!

  22. My mom and grandmothers did not have charm bracelets so it is so nice that you have theirs to add to your collection. As you said, such great memories of that time period. I only remember losing one charm from my bracelet because they all were soldered on EXCEPT my Anne of Green Gables charm from my penpal in PEI-----that would be you of course! Well, I still have the memory of it, at least. It was the green gables house with "green gables" written on the roof, a beaut, but impossible to replace by a young girl living in the west.

  24. I still have the charm bracelet my Mom gave me. I framed it because it's gotten too heavy to wear. I still add charms from special places.
