Finds!!

I don't think I have seen anything this nice at a thrift store in a year, I have always been taken with this style of casserole, I love the design, I grabbed it quickly at Value Village - have you ever seen one like it?  It's stamped Japan on  the bottom!  I love it!!

Last week I went to a yard sale, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this head vase sitting there, even if she needed some eylelash repair, you can't tell.   She was also made in Japan, she still has the original sticker on the bottom - An Enterprise Original.   I have only ever seen these in antique stores and they're way too expensive for me.  I just want one, no collection is starting!!  

Yesterday I went to two yard sales, one had nothing, the other one I came home with this great assortment of vintage magazines, I just can't leave them behind!   I do cut some of them up though, for SMASHing and now, pocket letters!!   This whole pile cost me $2 - they're full of great old ads..

I thought I'd share a few ads from them, what's the chance I picked two Christmas editions!!  Oh, well...

Remember Mail-in Offers?

I was thinking about how there used to be so many offers in magazines to send away for - maybe save up some labels or just send some money and you could own something pretty nice -probably some of these things we thrifters wish we could find now!!  

I started going through my vintage magazines, offers have been around for a while, in the older magazines it was usually booklets that were offered.   Then, bigger items became availalable, for next to nothing!!  I'm using only summer issues for this post - it's a fun one, hope you enjoy it too.

The earliest offer I found was from a 1957 Woman's Day issue.  Isn't this a strange advertising promotion - meat for perfume!!

Woman's Day from 1960 offered up this insulated baby bottle bag - I hate to say this but Mom had one of these for me, it was pink and it's still hanging around!!!

This might be my favourite of the bunch - The Hot Dog Rollster for $1 and the neckband from Kraft Barbecue Sauce.  It's from Woman's Day, 1961.

This "Bummin' Bag" was a nice deal - bag, tablecloth and apron - for $1.50 and the plastic top from Accent - from Family Circle, 1968.

All you had to do to get a roll of color film was turn in the coupon on The Del Monte juice can - from Family Circle, 1968

I like this one too, a lucky ladybug daisy pin or a tie bar - the tie bar was Sarah Coventry - it's another funny promotion - it was offered by Hudson Sprayers and Dusters.  This offer was in Woman's Day, 1969

If you were reading the Canadian ladies magazine, Chatelaine in July 1970, you might have sent in for this fondue set - with $2 and one wrapper from Chipits.

Things are getting more expensive in 1972 - $4.95 and one seal from a Kotex product for this underarm shaver - from Family Circle.

You had to save up 6 package fronts from Green Giant frozen vegetables or $1 and two fronts for this Green Giant bag - that's pretty cute!  From Family Circle, 1973.

Woman's Day, 1973 had a couple of offers - notecards from Virginia Slims -no cash, just four package bottoms.

No labels were involved in this offer from Jean Nate - just cash - $13.99 for a caftan worth $30.00.

This was a pretty good deal, $1 for each Disney doll and a Close-up toothpaste carton - from Woman's Day, 1974.

This handsome tote bag featuring jet-set styling and around the world durablity could be yours for just $5.50 and proof of purchase from Bonine - from Woman's Day, 1976.

The newest offer is from a 1981 issue of Family Circle - that's a pretty stylish running suit for $9.75, along with your cash register receipt showing purchase of Sugar Free Dr. Pepper.  Now, that's the way I remember sending away for things like this, with the cash register receipt.

I Like Old Stuff!

Finally, I found something good at a yard sale here in Town -  I've been wanting a blender for a while and was actually going to price them at the store when I found this - $5 for a blender in perfect condition!  Great deal!  I'm thinking it might be from the 80's, just because of the wood grain.

We went to visit Carla yesterday, this is what I picked up from that trip-a Perkins Pancake House side plate, probably from the 60's - it set me back 25 cents.

Can you imagine buying mustard in this little jar now?  There's a bunch of colored  toothpicks inside, I'll just leave them there.  The little jar is only 3 1/2 inches high

I paid $4 for this chopper/measuring cup.  I think it is made by Dominion Glass as it has a "D" in a diamond on the bottom  

I bought a couple of old catalogues at this shop before,  they were only $3 each, I've seen them at other shops and they're a lot more!  It's a great deal for these old Sears and Eaton's catalogues from the 60's and 70's...

50 cents for a Vera

I'm wondering if anybody has seen a jam pot like this?  My great aunt gave it to me when I was a little girl - I've always loved it and just brought it out for display once again.  There are no markings on it as to where it might have been made...

Summer Food from Forty Years Ago

How about a nice gelatin based salad?  Maybe a cool green salad made with Wesson oil.  Top your meal off with Strawberry Shortcake, made with Dream Whip.

Kraft Dips on crackers - remember when they came in metal cans and cream cheese came in a glass??  Of course, Ritz was the cracker to use - maybe some Parkay margarine as well.

Summer-proof Saltines - sounds good to me!!  Salad dressing just looks so much better in the old glass bottles.  No BBQ would be complete with Kraft BBQ sauce - the only kind that was ever used at home.

You could order the Bummin Bag for $1.50 plus a plastic top from Accent.  Weight Watchers Snacks came in apple, peach, and strawberry, and cinnamon, guess it must have been apple cinnamon!   We might have wanted to use some Chun King for the BBQ instead of the regular sauce.

A turkey sitting on a dock - now, that is something different!   Maybe some Beef Kabobs were prepared with St. Lawrence oil.  And finish a hot summer day off with a Frosty Float made with Spanada - a beverage made of grape wine and natural pure flavors.

Summer begins today so I thought it was a good day to get out the old magazines and hunt for some ads for Rednesday - check out all the goodies here, time again to link up with Vintage Thingie Thursday.  We still use most of these products today, only the packaging and the ads have changed!

Yard Sales Were Not Good!

The first Saturday for yard sales and I spent a whopping 50 cents and got two things for  free.    I sure hope things pick up.

These cocktail forks were 25 cents, there's one missing but they look they like were never used..

I'm on the lookout now for Sesame Street items - Holly from  Life on the Rock  collects vintage Sesame Street and a whole lot more - check out her latest finds here.  I paid 25 cents for these four books.

This is one of my free items - my husband likes rulers, this little box has one divider missing, but I thought he could use it for some sort of storage or even as an idea to make one himself.

A free 1983 Family Circle

Everything else I bought last week while out thrifting.  I paid $1 for all the books

I am hopeful this French version of the Canadian Purity cookbook will sell, I have it in English, it's a classic.

Walt Disney America

Some vintage children's books.  I had forgotten all about the story of  The Gingerbread Man - that's  not a very happy story for children, the poor gingerbread gets eaten by the sly fox!

It's not Vera, it's pretty though.  I can't find anything about it online, it's  Anne  Rothschild for Hanes...

This was a great find at Value Village, a big 045 - 2 1/2 qt. casserole, no lid, $3.99.  I  knew it was probably "Golden" something,  as I have a Golden Tulip and Golden Acorn but it stands alone as "Golden".  It was a1959 promotional, I like it!!
