Yes, We Drink Milk in a Bag!

Did that title catch your attention?  If you live in the US, I bet you are wondering what in the heck is she talking about...  I live in Ontario and I'm switching back to milk in the bag - because of the price, I much prefer this plastic container that is only available at my local convenience store - grocery stores here do not have plastic containers, they only carry the bags and cardboard boxes.  I just read that milk bags are available in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes but not in the Western provinces.  I know that the Maritimes offers the bag, the box and the jug in all grocery stores, I never could figure out why jugs weren't available here..

Goodbye, milk in a jug, when you cost $1 more than the bagged milk, it's time to switch back.  This jug is costing $5.29 right now, you do get 25 cents back when you return one, but, still the bagged milk is the better deal!

Here is the same amount of milk - there are three bags inside

This is the individual bag

The milk jug has gone all fancy, my old one used to be a solid boring color!

So, my American friends - have you heard of milk in a bag before?  Watch this video and  you can see just how we use this plastic wonder!

  1. Yeah, the best milk price we have is in a four litre jug in Alberta and BC. I would be happy to buy a bag if it was cheaper. The lowest price on Vancouver Island I can find is about $4.50 for 4 litres on sale. I used evap milk for my tea - prefer the taste.

  6. We used to buy bagged milk years ago when the kids were home and drank a lot of it. I found sometimes the plastic bag wouldn't get into the holder properly and the milk would flop and spill. We've used 2 litre cartons for years now as there is only the two of us and we use very little. The cartons have a nice capped spout which is really convenient and all recyclable. I lose my 5 cents deposit but not worth the trip to town to the recycle plant. The bag jug is cute. About time they came out with something fun.

  7. It's so funny the things we take for granted - I hadn't realized the bags were not available everywhere. Not only are bags cheaper, the trash is much smaller too!

  9. I buy milk in a bag too!

I even got an organizer so the bags stay put and don't fall all over in the fridge!

It's my fave, takes less space in the fridge and less in the recycling bin!

  11. It took me a few months to realize that bagged milk is not sold in Newfoundland! Im not much of a milk drinker, so I wouldnt be buying bagged milk anyway, too much to go through. NL used to sell bagged milk apparently, Ive seen the milk bag holders at value village before. Haha. We only can buy milk in cartons 1 and 2 litres. The cost of milk went up here very recently, and we have to pay a deposit (which we DONT get back). Growing up my family bought bagged milk always, after my Grandmother passed away we took her mlk bag holder, it was a heavy ceramic thing with a detailed train design, it was quite a sight! It was def vintage, but I think it was dropped and broke a few years back.

  12. I've heard of milk in a bag from another Canadian blogger, and I think it's a great idea, because it must cut down on the recycling of those jugs. I wish the water companies could somehow switch to "water in a bag", because I hear that there is a huge amount of them floating together in the ocean!

  13. i have been to canada once (prince edward island) and i remember being blow away by the recycling cans everywhere! our hotel trashcans were even divided! I love that Canada seems to environmentally conscious. I bet if you tried to do that bags instead of jugs here in America people would riot! How much plastic we would save though!
