Watch What You're Buying!!
I don't always bake, there are just some things that I don't bake and only pre packaged will do. I plan to have strawberry shortcake over the weekend, vanilla pound cake is what I use and I always buy it!! I was at a different grocery store this week and picked up this cake.
It looks good enough from the front, I was in a hurry and just took it, I didn't look at the best before date, didn't look at the back of it or anything, I feel embarrassed that I bought this cake so blindly. First of all, if I had looked at the best before date, I probably would have put it down right then, best before - Sept. 23 - really, what does this cake have in it?
When I was putting it away at home, I finally looked at the back - this cake was made in Dubai, United Arab Emirates - now I have nothing against that country but why in heaven's name is this cake at a grocery store in Canada? I wish I had turned the cake over and saw the back, I would have seen the print at the top, looked at the ingredients and then saw where it was made - I would never have purchased it!!! The first ingredient is sugar, oh my goodness, since this grocery store is not in my town, it will be going to the garbage! I went to my local grocery store yesterday and bought a cake made in Canada!!
Sometimes we are in a rush and don't inspect these packages like we should, I thought the day I bought relish made in India, that was bad enough but this seems worse, we should be supporting our own when we can and the products are made here. By the way, I returned that relish to the store and they looked at me like I had ten heads when I said why I was returning it!!
Buyer Beware!!!
It should be much easier to buy products made in Canada - but its not. I live on Vancouver Island where we grow tons of produce yet see vegetables and meat imported from all over the world. What gets me really crazy are those A&W commercials that say they used meat from Australia (or New Zealand, can't remember). Really, we absolutely have some of the best beef in the whole world in Canada and they import it to save a buck. Nasty Nasty. I am not eating there anymore because of it.
ReplyDeleteIt's the same in the U.S. You have to watch everything these days. Rather annoying.
ReplyDeleteIt's really disturbing to see products like this in our stores. I agree that we should be buying local or Canadian when we can. And yes, we need to read the ingredient labels too! Thanks for the tips Jill. Have a nice Easter weekend.
ReplyDeleteOK cake like that isn't cake! Glad you threw it away and got a real cake! I need to be more aware of the products I buy also.
ReplyDeleteI'll now be checking where the products I purchase are made. Thanks for this post.
ReplyDeleteI don't even buy American made pound cake. A good homemade one is so delicious! And I know your recipes are always outstanding! Happy Easter
ReplyDeleteDid you check where the strawberries were grown? Just wondering? Linda@Wetcreek Blog
A pound cake is about the last thing I would expect to be made in UAE! Here in the US it's getting harder and harder to find things that aren't made in China. Never thought to check where the food is coming from!
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter!

I am a big label reader since working at Shopper's Drug Mart! I was in charge of removing the expired stuff from the shelves...There was A LOT! The manager could'nt believe his eyes...I guess the lady who did that before me was not doing a real good job of it but I was so bored that I really took it to heart! I try not to buy foodstuff grown in China (like garlic) because of the melamine powder in the formula scandal...
ReplyDeleteWho knew India was such a huge cucumber producer? I bought baby gherkins from India once...didn't return them but never bought that brand again!
