A Little Halloween at Our House

I don't think I've ever done two blog posts in one day before - but, I'm going away for the night tomorrow so I'm doing it now.  I wanted to share a little bit of Halloween around our house...

I bought the pumpkin blowmold at a little grocery store on Prince Edward Island,  I never see new blowmolds here or hardly ever see old ones either.  

I've had the light up ghosts for a long time, I still like it just as much as when I bought it, the other two are new this year.

Maddie's cookbook is displayed - thanks for that!!!  That's two music globes that play scary music!

Halloween Memories

There won't be much text in this post - I've been going through the pictures and this is what I found for Halloween...  As always, clicking on the picture will give you a closer look...

Mom made me this crepe paper dress for a Halloween Party,  I can't imagine how crinkly that felt.

Guess that was the year of the clowns!  A small plastic bag was good enough for Cheryl and I.

Notice I had a white cap on under the red one - it was probably freezing.  I just recently saw this bag on Pinterest, I recognized it right away - looks like I used it for at least two years!

Annalee Dolls

Have you heard of the Annalee Mobilitee  dolls?  I never did until the other week, on the way home, in New Hampshire.  They've been around since the 50's - at that time they were made by Annalee Thornton and her husband, they were made at their "Factory in the Woods" it's 75 years now and counting for the Annalee doll.   Annalee is long gone now , the dolls are still designed in NH, but made in China.   I spotted them first in an antique shop and I've been kicking myself ever since, they were $10 and there  just might have been some older ones, why, why, didn't I look at them closer.   And, we were close to their retail store, maybe it's a good thing we didn't get there! When we stopped for the night I spotted a Home Goods store, a duplicate of our Home Sense in Canada, it was a beautiful store and they already had a lot of Christmas things out - there were those same dolls again.  They just took my eye and the price was right.

This is one of a set of four, called The Wannabes, this one is The Present, there's also Poinsettia, Snowman and Christmas Tree - this was the only one that was there.  I paid $9.99 for it

How cute is this?  She has the year 2008 on her tag.

There was only this lone Halloween one - I have him twisted around the post - the year 2004 is on his tag.

These are great little ornaments that you could twist anywhere - the faces are very realistic, maybe even a little creepy, but still cute enough!

Cranberry Orange Loaf

I didn't know that I would write about this loaf when I made it the other day, so there's only the after pictures and as you can see, it's half gone!  If you have a bag of cranberries around - give this loaf a try, it tastes even better the next day!

Cranberry Orange Loaf

1/4 cup margarine

1 cup white sugar

1 egg

Juice of 1 orange and water to make 3/4 cup

Put margarine, sugar and egg in mixing bowl.  Beat smooth.  Stir in juice.

2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

Grated rind of 1 orange

1 1/2 cups whole cranberries, fresh or frozen

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts.

In second bowl measure in flour, baking powder, soda and salt.  Stir in orange rind, cranberries and nuts.  Empty all into batter stirring until moistened.  Scrape into greased loaf pan.  Bake in 350 oven for 1 hour.  Let stand 10 minutes.  Cool on rack.

Dishes and Scarves

I brought these lovely pink dishes back home with me, taken from the cupboard - Mom loved glass,   - plates, candy dishes, bowls, anything at all but  I don't know anything about old glass at all.  I can bet there is someone out there who can tell me something about these pieces.  Help me!    There are no markings on either one.

Prince Edward Island was very good to me when it came to Vera scarves -  that's six new Vera's - my collection now numbers eighty-eight - I started collecting last fall.  The most I paid for any of these was $2.99.

Back to Thrifting

It was two weeks since I had been around to my regular thrifting haunts- Wednesday I went -  it was a great day - I found something at every stop - except Value Village, no luck there, at all...

First stop - St. Vincent de Paul - it wasn't a big purchase - only 75 cents total, but I think it made my happiest - those knee huggers are just so cute..

These cute little guys were just in a bin of junk - their faces are dirty and need a little scrubbing and some glue needs to be used for the red cap

Look - they have the original sticker - Japan.

I know this guy is a newer version but he still looks pretty nice perched in the tree.

Next stop - Salvation Army, I have never bought so many things in there and all I paid was $5.25 - for EVERYTHING.

A Little Golden Book version - Rudolph is quite handsome with his nose so shiny and bright!

This box was full of vintage greeting cards, I never find anything like that!

I remember the Fuller Brush man coming around with his wares and who's Mother and Grandmother didn't wear one of these rain caps?  Mine did!

I passed glasses like this one time before, I don't know why I bought them, I just like them, I guess.  I'll be listing them.

Butterprint 441 - is there anyone out there who needs this bowl - I would be willing to trade.

All that for $5.25 - and I forgot to go back for a Saltines tin that I saw first time round.

Next stop, Jarrett Center - three items purchased, $1.75 spent.  So, my total for the day was $7.75 - not bad...

This hardcover was published in 1953 - I picked it up as soon as I saw it, the cover is sweet.

Thanks for the Gifts!!

Who doesn't love to get packages in the mail and when they're unexpected - it's even nicer.  Before I went away, I got a nice little package from Erica - that would be the Erica from Golden Egg Vintage - I sent her a little something since she's been laid up with that pesky cast and then she sent something back, she didn't have to do that, I so appreciate it!!   I sure hope she's feeling much better, I know she's looking forward to getting back to the thrifts on her own steam...

From Miss Maddie

Miss Maddie sent me this sweet book - her mother is another Erica and her blog is The Adventures of Two (Pyrex Crazy) Thrifting Sisters - she writes along with her sister, Hanna - they find so many great things, if you haven't read it, you really should!   Anyway, Erica often mentions her daughter, Maddie, who is also a collector of vintage goodness, I sent Maddie a little package for her crafty ideas and her collection - lo and behold, she mailed this off to me - because she had a double.  Thanks, Maddie - that is so kind of you!!!  

Some Christmas from Home

We're back from another trip to Prince Edward Island - hopefully, the sad events are over and we can really enjoy a vacation when we go back the next time.  

I scrounged through the house for Christmas items and this is what I came back with...sometimes it just feels like an antique market there -  but way better, it's free and I remember all these things being used at Christmas when I was a little girl.

I'm showing the three sides to this music box that plays "Silent Night" - it belonged to my grandmother and is still in the original box.

There was a red candle in the middle but it was in rough shape so I'll have to get a new one.

After Christmas we would go to visit my grandparents in New Brunswick, Mom always had to get to the after Christmas sales at Woolco, I remember the popcorn machine there, that's what I wanted, I didn't want to be walking around looking at Christmas ornaments, but I sure like them now!  The sale price on these glittery balls was 74 cents.

I never heard of the term Putz until I started reading blogs, I guess that is what these are - we always had these, I have a bunch more - stamped - Japan.  I love the big Christmas tree, it even has real balls on it.

Pinecone Snowmen

I bought this at a little shop in Maine on the way home - everything upstairs was half off - I  paid $1.00 - I guess it's an ashtray, I just thought it was so cute.

I was so happy to find this Santa blowmold at an  antique shop in Vermont - he's about 13 inches tall - I paid $15 - it's stamped - Empire Plastic Corp, 1968.  I never see things like that around here, I didn't mind paying that for such a nice Santa.
