My Grandmother's Cookies

My grandmother, Louise was a great cook - I was speaking with her brother just yesterday, when I told him that I was making these cookies, he started reminiscing about her molasses cookies - I can still taste them too - thick and oh, so good. This is where all the baking started - isn't that a great old fridge??

The "pantry" above was a new addition to the house, that same fridge used to be out in the kitchen area.  It's not the greatest picture but she is wearing an apron - maybe she had whipped something up that day!

Before Christmas I found this little Robin Hood Flour cookbook while out thrifting  - it's only 28 pages but it's chock full of great cookies and squares..

Page 4 - Raspberry Swirl Coconut Cookies - these were the ones that she made and I  just loved them.  I used to call them Nazareth cookies, why, I don't know...  I looked through her recipe box and her recipe "scribbler" not there - maybe she had this book herself.

So, I made the recipe from the book - they are just like I remember them - the very same!!! And, they taste so fresh, because I used my raspberry jam that I made this summer.      Click on the recipe if you're interested in making them.  There is one instruction that is funny - pour flour into dry measuring cup.  Level off and pour onto waxed paper.  Add soda and salt, stir well.   What is that?  Stirring on a piece of waxed paper - I have quite enough bowls - I don't need a big mess like that all over the counter, I don't recall ever reading that in a recipe before.

The finished product - on my Pyrex Pink Leaves Plate.

They're ready for anytime snacking in the Pyrex Cookie Jar! This is a great recipe -  let me know if you try it...

I'm linking up with A Favorite Thing at Mockingbird Hill Cottage - these cookies were really one of my favorites all those years ago when I could run across the road to watch my grandmother bake, and they're still my favorite!  I'm also joining in at The Country Cook and Scrumptious Sunday at Addicted to Recipes

  1. We had that same cookie jar when I was a kid! Long gone now I am afraid. I tried your pancakes and they were a hit. Now, I shall have to try these cookies! I might change out the recipe to blackberry jam though as we have loads of it (my Mother made tons this summer).

  2. What a great post. I enjoyed seeing your grandmother's kitchen and pantry and her recipe box. I love that it's turquoise! I have my mil's pale pink one and a yellow one that was mine growing up. That is a very strange step in the recipe with the wax paper. Maybe it was to keep from dirtying another bowl. lol I hope you have a good week. Blessings, Pamela

  4. I love this post. I have this memory of my mom sifting flour onto wax paper and then stirring it - not sure why at this point in my life??? - but I do recall it. Maybe she stirred in the baking soda or powder or salt, while it was on the wax paper? Funny how methods change.

    Happy week to you!

  5. My grandmother was a great baker, too! She lived with us and I learned everything I know about baking from her...

What a wonderful post with wonderful memories. I think I'll try the raspberry cookies. I'm with you, though -- I'll use one of my bowls to mix the dry ingredients.

  9. Your cookies turned out great! Love how you displayed them on that pretty leaf Pyrex plate. I picked up that same Pyrex cookie barrel at an Estate sale in the fall.

  11. When I took home economics, many years ago, they taught us to sift the flour onto wax paper and then remeasure it because the sifted flour took up more space so you actually used less flour. Then add the other dry ingredients onto the wax paper and then add all of those dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Maybe your gram was of the same school...old school!

  12. Jill, I'm laughing at the wax paper instructions. Pretty quirky! These do sound yummy. I haven't made the muffins yet. Something has come up every day. Hoping to in the morning. I am pinning these now too. Love your sweet plate!
