Good Housekeeping 1938

Yesterday I bought these two 1938 Good Housekeeping magazines off a local buy, sell and trade site many of you that read my posts regularly know that I really like to find vintage magazines.

One thing that I noticed when I was going through them last night, a lot of advertisements used cartoon captions, I'm going to share a few of those with you.  Click on any pic for a closer view.

There are very few colored ads in these magazines.

If only the summer menu was this easy!!!  He looks happy to be having that can of Franco American Spaghetti.

She should have used Royal Baking Powder right from the start!!

This is a funny one!!

Fresh sandwiches in waxed paper!!

She wants to move to Siam - see why....

Things could be so much better with Colgate Dental Cream!

Fels-Naptha soap must have been popular back then, I've seen different ads for it.

Quite the name for a toothbrush!!

Palomolive - the remedy for "middle age skin"

Be dainty - Loretta Young was!

I wonder does grapefruit juice really work for sleepless nights?

These two magazines are the oldest ones I've found so far - a Good Housekeeping magazine for 25 cents and for a much thicker magazine than we have now!!  Couldn't go wrong!!

  5. My personal favorites are the Posts from the WWII years! Every ad had Buy War Bonds encouragement. People looked so adorable in 40s fashions! Hair-dos were so cute too...ah, all that and Glenn Miller too!

  6. Those look great! The cover art looks very Norman Rockwell. Several weeks ago I found two Newfoundland song books, one from the mid 1940s, before confederation. They both have old black and white ads in them, a lot of them are for local places that once were, lots of cod liver oil ads too! it seemed to be the cure-all for most everything!:)

  10. I love these, Jill. The mayo- fruit mold kinda looks good if you can get past the idea of it having mayo in it. The "Siam" one cracked me up! Thank you for sharing this at History & Home this week, take care - Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com

  11. Wow, another great find. I am always on the lookout for older magazines but those at 1938 - very cool as that was during the depression and many didn't have any money for such things. It is a wonder they lasted, and were probably treasured that is why they are still around.
